Administrating Agency: Maine Department of Public Safety.
Participating Agencies and Organizations:
Steps for Activation: The law enforcement agency which has jurisdiction in the child's domicile gathers information about the case and determines whether it meets the criteria for an Amber Alert. If so, the information is given to the Maine State Police, which reviews the criteria and, if warranted, issues a statewide Amber Alert via the EAS system. Once the initial EAS alert is issued, radio and TV stations are asked to rebroadcast the pertinent facts for the next several hours (not via the EAS system).
Scope of Amber Alert: Statewide
Criteria for Activation: The Maine Amber Alert Plan is to be activated ONLY when three criteria have been met: A child 15 years of age or younger is abducted and there is reason to believe the victim is in imminent danger of serious bodily injury or death; and there is information available to disseminate to the general public which could assist in the safe recovery of the victim and/or the apprehension of a suspect.
Utilizes Emergency Alert System: Department of Safety activates the Emergency Alert System (EAS). The information is broadcast over the EAS one time only.
